If you are retired, semi-retired, or simply looking for a rewarding way to give back, why not consider joining the Braunton Community Speed Watch (CSW) Team?   

One of the most common concerns raised by residents when speaking with the police is speeding vehicles. Community Speed Watch provides local people with an opportunity to play an active role in helping to improve road safety within Braunton and the surrounding area.   

Our Community Speed Watch team has grown successfully over the years and consists of dedicated volunteers who work together with the shared aim of making our roads safer. All volunteers are fully trained, police approved and supported by Devon & Cornwall Police.

The team monitors locations where speeding has been identified as a concern. These sites are selected and risk-assessed in partnership with the police to ensure they are safe and suitable for enforcement activity. Officers from our Roads Policing Team sometimes support the sessions and can deal directly with more serious offenders encountered during operations.

Community Speed Watch sessions typically take place a couple of times each week and usually last between one and two hours. Volunteers can operate from any of the approved monitoring sites across Braunton, of which there are currently around twelve.

What's Involved?

Community Speed Watch is a flexible voluntary role. Volunteers are trained and supported by the police but organise and run sessions independently as a team. Sessions can be arranged during daylight hours at times that suit the volunteers.

Teams generally operate with a minimum of three members. The more volunteers we recruit, the more frequently sessions can be held and the greater impact we can have on improving road safety.

Using approved speed detection equipment, volunteers monitor vehicle speeds at designated locations. Vehicles found to be exceeding the speed limit have their details recorded and submitted to Devon & Cornwall Police. Warning letters are then issued to registered keepers, while repeat offenders can be identified and referred to the Roads Policing Team for further direct action.
